Rep. Shri Thanedar Introduces Resolution to Designate April 7, 2025, as World Health Day
Washington, DC - This week, Rep. Shri Thanedar introduced H. Res. 298, the World Health Day Resolution. This resolution designates April 7, 2025, as “World Health Day” and recognizes the importance of prioritizing public health nationally and globally. World Health Day is already celebrated and recognized internationally on April 7th by the World Health Organization.
“High-quality and accessible healthcare is fundamental to every community,” said Rep. Thanedar. “At a time when programs like Medicaid are under threat by the current administration, setting aside time to reflect on the importance of our healthcare systems and those who make them possible is absolutely essential. I am proud to be introducing this resolution to highlight what’s great about our healthcare system, and of course what needs to be improved.”
The resolution honors the labor of healthcare workers and caretakers as a cornerstone of the health and wellbeing of our communities, stresses that physical health and mental health are inextricably linked, and acknowledges that shortcomings in providing access to healthcare most heavily affect children, seniors, and people of color.
This year's World Health Day kicked off the World Health Organization’s “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures” campaign, which calls on the health community to end preventable maternal and newborn deaths and highlights the need to prioritize women’s longer-term health and well-being. The Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health endorses the World Health Day Resolution.
The resolution was introduced with Representative André Carson, Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, and Representative Dwight Evans as original cosponsors.
Representative Jim McGovern and Representative Hank Johnson are also cosponsors.
